Boyan Ivanov, Theatre Director and Managing Director of Drama Theatre – Ruse, on “The Ploughman and Death” by Johannes von Tepl, directed by Silviu Purcărete, presented at the festival within the international programme on 7th June, Drama Theatre – Second Stage.
I’ve seen several of Purcărete’s productions, including his feature film, but what truly struck me after The Ploughman and Death was the fact that the entire production had been rehearsed and prepared entirely online. Purcărete was never physically present during rehearsals — everything, from working with the actors to developing the visual concept, was done remotely. This is impressive not only because of the technical challenges involved but also because it comes from an artist of advanced age who not only adapts but elevates directing to a new level.
As for the performance itself — I’ve always appreciated Purcărete’s work, but this was one of the most powerful things I’ve ever seen. Every scene carries elegance and lightness, and the simplicity of the expressive tools only intensifies the emotional impact. The strength of the imagery, the innocence and depth of the narrative, combined with a brilliant interpretation of this medieval poem, create an extraordinary theatrical experience.
